DIY Online Marketing for the Little Guys!

Think you’ve got to spend thousands of dollars on a successful marketing campaign? Think again. In recent months, small businesses and services providers from around the world have started their own do-it-yourself (DIY) online-marketing campaigns. Remarkably, companies who have used these approaches have seen enormous returns on their investments.

Of course, as a social media and content management company, we had to test-drive these small-business marketing tactics for ourselves. In doing so, we teamed up with One Piece Van, a Vancouver boutique-style design distribution company to see what kind of responses we could generate with a simple photo-shoot, some slight photo-editing, and a lot of shameless self-promotion.

Here are a few steps you can take to launch your own DIY online marketing campaign:

Step one: Create a Facebook page, Twitter handle, Pinterest account and Instagram. These four platforms are ideal for connecting with your local community, friends and family.

Step two: Put your creative thinking-hat on, and get snapping! Depending on the kind of products you make, you will want to showcase your products in a way that reflects the message you want to convey. With One Piece Vancouver, we took several of their custom-made scarves and dressed ourselves up in some simple clothing to showcase these unique pieces! Remember: you don’t need to hire models – simply ask your friends to spare some time and get the photo-shoot done!

Step three: Edit your photos. You give your photos a unique, trendy look with free online photo editors like ipiccy.com. Don’t go overboard on the editing, you want to ensure that your products have the same look and feel that they do in real life.

Step four: Upload your photos to your social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram). If you have an online store (i.e. Etsy.com) remember to link all of your content back to where potential customers can purchase your product. Ask your friends and family to share, like and comment on your new content! You can use the long-tail of social media to spread your products far and wide.

Step five: Repeat. Maintain your efforts. The more content you upload to your social media channels — the more likely your products are going to spread like wildfire!

Remember, all you need is a little innovation, a great product, and consistent efforts to get your products out there. DIY online-marketing for the little-guys in business has never been more accessible and cost efficient.
